Getting Your Dog Ready for Exercise: A Guide for Dog Owners

As humans, we often set resolutions to exercise more and eat healthier. But for our dogs, these decisions are in our hands. Before starting any new exercise program with your dog, it’s important to ensure they’re physically ready for the activity.

Assess Your Dog’s Health

Most dogs love being active, especially when it means spending time with you. However, if your dog hasn’t been active for a while or has health issues like arthritis, heart disease, obesity, or breathing problems, exercise could lead to discomfort. If your dog hasn’t seen a vet recently or is over 7 years old, schedule a checkup before starting a new activity. Obesity is particularly common and can limit mobility. Gradual exercise, paired with a healthy diet, will help your dog ease into a routine.

Start Slowly and Build Up

Don’t expect your dog to run 5 kilometers right away. Begin with short distances—try 500-meter increments (or maybe even less) —and check in with your dog to see if they’re comfortable. Gradually increase the distance as their endurance improves. Also, be mindful of the heat, especially for short-nosed breeds. Bring plenty of water, take frequent breaks, and watch for signs of overheating like excessive panting or sluggishness.

After Exercise Care

Just like us, dogs can experience muscle soreness after a workout. Avoid giving them human pain relievers like aspirin or ibuprofen, which can be dangerous. Instead, use gentle massage, and consult your vet for safe pain relief options if needed.

Choose Activities That Suit Your Dog’s Strengths

Different breeds excel in different activities. Retrievers and water dogs love swimming, herding dogs enjoy agility exercises, and most medium to large dogs make great running partners. Whether it’s a hike, run, or walk, your dog will love getting active with you.

So grab the leash and get moving for a fun, healthy season with your best friend!
