How Long Does a Rescue Dog Need to Settle In?

The 3-3-3 guideline teaches us approximaely how long a rescue dog takes to adjust after being rehomed. Remember that their whole world has been turned upside down. All dogs are different and some will settle more quickly than others.

3 Days - To decompress

  • feeling overwhelmed

  • may be unsure and scared

  • not comfortable enough to be themselves

  • may not want to eat or drink

  • hides and wants to be alone

  • tests boundaries

3 Weeks - To learn your routine

  • starts to settle in

  • feeling more comfortable

  • understands this may be forever home now

  • figures out his environment

  • gets into his routine (and yours)

  • starts to trust and show their personality more

  • behaviour issues may begin to appear

3 Months - To start to feel at home

  • begin to build trust and a bond with new owners

  • finally feels comfortable and truly at home

  • gains a sense of security and comfort

  • fully settled into your routine

Please give them a chance. You have changed one thing by taking them in. Their whole world has been changed, without their permission. It will take time, all dogs are unique so they will adjust at their own pace. I feel that training together is a great way to bond.
